I grew up being told uruguayans are nice & warm, while first worlders are cold, and distant but the more I travel the more I realize this aint so, and I imagine it being hard for someone from outside to integrate and develop a support network if you don't happen to work in mixed environment and have some luck.

Hi, I had always thought that Uruguay would be the gem of south america..somehow I thought that cliche was unique..but they say it all the time. I got here and I realized all the hype led me to be let down. And I find the people mixed...to be fair, but I have met an great amount of obnoxious Uruguyans, another shock because I had romanticized, I supposed that they were indeed very humble people. I continue to excuse everything I see and tell myself it is just my neighborhood, or that it is just that so many I come in contact with have connections to the United States and it is "those creeps" who have contaminated these good decent people. Well, whatever the case, I do meet nice people to, but unfortunately it is usually just in passing...so they really don't have much influence in my work and life....it is the creeps that do...unfortunately. I have made an effort to try to grab on to the nice ones and develope a better support system with them, because I realize how few and far between it might be to find them.--and usually, they are nice with a smile, but they really don't care to develop anything because they are into themselves and do not have the welcoming history that other countries, with an imigrant histroy have....

I have just discovered your blog! I love it! I am from Europe but I felt in love with a Uruguayan here. Now he went back to Montevideo and I've still the Uruguay flag in my room... I wish I'll see him again, I am currently planning my holiday in Uruguay but probably I would like to leave all capitalism of Europe because of love... I miss him, he had such a good heart. Love Uruguay.

I am from Oregon but am looking for another country to reside with my daughter. Uruguay looks great & affordable if i live outside Montevideo or Punta del Este.

I'd like to know more about the weather. Is it really humid in the summer? What kind of heating systems are used for the winters? How cold is it? How much does heating cost? I am researching La Paloma. I like small towns & might even like living out far enough to have a goat &/or chickens.

We lived in Puerto Vallarta Mexico for 6 years & the housing prices are getting too expensive there.

I d love to be able to communicate with someone. I have so many questions. Muchas gracias.

What's with this International Living site that everyone keeps promoting and is linked with in their blogs? All they do is try to sell you some get rich quick scheme, while providing no relevant or valid information on Uruguay and I suspect anything else. They have a long narrative followed by a suspicious sales pitch on some hokie venture. Get rid of it!!! Otherwise, I appreciate your blog. Thanks.

Hi,

I was also born in Montevideo along with my older sister. We left back in the late 80's and since then we've lived in NYC and currently reside in Miami, FL.

We have most of our family in Uruguay. We went to visit sometime in 2000 and we certainly enjoyed all of the good eating and "las termas".

Good to see your blog is putting Uruguay on the map. Keep up the excellent work.

I totally disagree with these adjectives. I lived in in Montevideo for three years when I finished high school and I learned that uruguayans,especially from Montevideo are very noisy,loud,friendly but also aggressive in some ways especially the youth.

Just think of the wide and common "habit" of shouting names at the ladies on the streets
And the frequent brawls at the pubs and discos...

I'm afraid I am one of those who could not place Uruguay on a map until a few months ago, even though I had been to South America (Peru). I have lived in the US all my life and have started looking for a new place to live, and the more I read, the more Uruguay keeps coming up! Some people seem to think it is not very exciting, but sometimes that's a good thing! (Check this out: http://tinyurl.com/qjcdq) And if you want some adventurous travel, Argentina and Brazil are right next door.

I hope to visit very soon! In the meantime, your blog is helping me get a taste of daily life there. It is hard to find good information about your country -- Thanks, and please keep it up!
